Art

Children at Hill House are taught by specialist art teachers from an early age.

The practice of art encourages self expression and the imagination.

Everything around us in this world has to be imagined first before going on to be created; even banal subjects such as a chair, a lampost or a car.

It is artists who enrich and enhance the lives of each of us whether we are living in a house, riding in a car, watching a film or glancing at an advertisement.

The means by which the above has come about may have been aided by the hands of engineers, scientists or mathematicians but it is the artist who dreamt the dream and communicated it in the first place.

Of course, it is not enough to have thought of an idea, or used one's imagination for an idea. The role of the art teacher is partly to give practical tools needed to express them, but also, and as importantly, to encourage the confidence and innate talent that resides within.

Increasing the pupil's visual awareness and developing a visual memory is emphasised whilst being taught drawing, painting, print making, 3-dimensional work including clay and other art techniques. Pupils keep sketch books to record their own observations and ideas.

A knowledge and awareness of other artists lives and work is introduced from an early age with visits to art galleries and exhibitions.

The children's work is regularly entered into art competitions where they have achieved a very good success rate in having their own work exhibited and commended.

The School has two art galleries (one in Pont Street and one in Cadogan Gardens) where the children's art is shown in exhibitions three times a year.

Music

Hill House regards the appreciation of music as a most important element in a boy's and girl's make up and the Music Department provides unrivalled opportunities for them to develop their talents at an early age when progress is quick and other academic pressures are not so great as to interrupt regular practise routines. There are orchestras, eight choirs, chamber music groups, string quartets, guitar ensembles, woodwind ensembles and a brass consort.

In 1972 a fine two manual organ with mechanical action containing 456 pipes was especially commissioned for the school and installed in the Music Room. The school also possesses two harpsichords, a clavichord, 17 pianos and a stock of over 300 orchestral instruments which are loaned to boys and girls for the duration of their time at Hill House.

There is a second large church organ in St. Columba's Pont Street where the whole school assembles for singing every Wednesday morning at 9.00am.

Tuition is given in the following instruments by twenty six specialist tutors:

RecorderFrench HornViolinPiano
FluteTrumpetViolaOrgan
OboeTromboneCelloHarpsichord
ClarinetDouble BassSolo Singing
BassoonGuitarComposition
Harp

The full course comprises instrumental tuition, choral work, aural and theory training and ensemble coaching. In addition boys and girls have access to a comprehensive music library.

Thirty-two choral scholarships are awarded each year to boys and girls already in one of the school choirs. A residential music course is held every summer for the scholars, who have also toured in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden.

Many music scholarships have been won to Public schools in recent years and many Hill House pupils have gone on to have illustrious careers in both classical and popular music.

Games

The policy at Hill House is to teach the basic principles of all games. By experiencing a variety of sports, and having the opportunity to learn different skills, boys and girls can find out which games suit them best and specialise and prepare for the challenges of competitive sport at their next school.

In the world today it is important that boys and girls learn to react quickly in an emergency and have the ability to get themselves out of a dangerous situation. It is vital to learn to have a good sense of co-ordination and muscle control as well as to have the desire to compete and win.

Situated in the heart of London, Hill House has the good fortune to use top sports facilities all of which are accessible using our fleet of six buses.

Sport is a vital part of the curriculum at Hill House and therefore boys and girls go to games at least once every day and also swim once a week.
